Gigondas L'Argnee Vieilles Vignes 2017
Only one hectare, certainly 50-80 meters below Clos de Tourelles, next to a single layer of Saint Cosme. Ancient vines, over 100 years old, all Prephyloxera, so root-safe. Sandy soils, limestone weathering. Completely unstacked, mashed as whole grapes and fermented spontaneously and aged in wood powder and tonneau. Biodynamically worked and certified. The floors are on the rocky bottom of Gigondas, but most of it is mostly light sand. This is also the reason why these can be Prephyloxera vines at all. The phylloxera doesn't like sand. In addition to the Clos des Tourelles, this is the second gigondas from Perrin. The wine is incredibly dense, mature and intense. The fruit goes much more towards plum in 2017. Plum and very ripe, red fruit. Mulberry, including rich sweet raspberry and strawberry. Rich, mature and intense. Showing far more charm than the grandiose, massive long live 2016. We have so incredibly lush, soft tannins here. Silky, velvety, round. Nice length and freshness. This is a real charmer for a Gigondas. A sumptuous wine with a lot of pressure behind it. Not the classic structure as in 2016, rather a charm offensive and reminiscent of 2015. And 2015 was a big year in Gigondas. But not the tannin structure of 2016. Still a great wine.
